Police Investigate Incident on Mountain Island Lake

On Sunday July 5, 2020 at approximately 2:30 pm the Gaston County Police responded to an incident that occurred on an uninhabited island on Mountain Island Lake.  Severe weather arrived suddenly in the area causing a boat to seek shelter on the island.  As the two occupants sought shelter on the island, a large tree uprooted and landed on one of the two people resulting in a fatal injury.

Several people were on the island at the time of the severe weather.  The people on the island attempted to provide lifesaving care to no avail.  The victim died at the scene.

Several agencies responded to assist with the incident:

  • North Carolina Wildlife
  • Gaston County Emergency Medical Services
  • Lucia Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department
  • Stanley Rescue Squad
  • Mount Holly Fire Department

The identification of the victim has not been released at this time due to the fact that the family has not been notified.
