Gaston County has 14th Confirmed Rabies Case of 2019
On Monday October 28th, 2019 at approximately 9:10 am Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement unit received a call from the 900 block of Toncin Ave. Bessemer City, NC 28016. The call was in reference to a possible rabid animal. A family dog was fighting with a raccoon and the owner stepped in to separate the two animals. The dog owner killed the raccoon that kept advancing on him, but neither the owner nor his dog were scratched or bitten by the raccoon.
Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Wednesday October 30th, 2019 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies.
The Adult female Labrador on Toncin Ave. Bessemer City, NC 28016 was up to date on her required rabies vaccinations and received a rabies booster shot the following day.
Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Toncin Ave. Bessemer City, NC 28016 to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.
Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified Gaston County Department Health and Human Services to relay our case information, so they can complete their regular follow up investigation.
The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.
This represents the fourteenth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.
