Gaston County has 9th Confirmed Rabies Case of 2019
On Monday September 16, 2019 at approximately 2:12pm Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement unit received a call from 1000 block of Dornoch Rd Gastonia, NC 28054. The call was in reference to possible rabid animal. Two family dogs fought with a raccoon. The raccoon was killed during this incident.
Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Wednesday September 18, 2019 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies.
The family animals on Dornoch Drive did have the required rabies vaccinations. As a result, the dogs received a rabies vaccine booster on September 18, 2019 from a Veterinarian certified in North Carolina.
Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Dornoch Rd to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.
The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.
This represents the ninth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.
