Scott Hunter, Sr. is currently serving as the Interim Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal for Gaston County and was appointed in May 2023. Scott has over 41 years of fire, special operations, EMS, and Emergency Management experience serving in operational and administrative positions. 

Scott holds an associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology from Central Piedmont Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Fire Service Management from Fayetteville State University, and is in the final semester of a master’s degree in Public Administration from Gardner-Webb University. He holds numerous certifications including Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor III, and Fire Investigator and has been designated as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) and Chief Training Officer (CTO) by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

He has received the following recognitions: Order of the Longleaf Pine, Medals for Distinguished Action, Firefighter of the Year, EMT of the Year, Life Member of the Mecklenburg County Fire Service, and multiple Unit and Company Citations. 

Scott is a collaborative leader with a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the members of the Office of Emergency Management & Fire Services. He and his team are committed to improving the all-hazards services delivered to the citizens and visitors of Gaston County. Prior to this appointment, he served Gaston County as the Deputy Director of Emergency Management and Deputy Fire Marshal.
