GASTONIA, N.C. — The Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services named four honorees as Public Health Heroes for 2023.
Established in 2007, the Public Health Hero Awards recognize outstanding individuals or groups that contribute to the health and well-being of Gaston County.
ABOUT THE 2023 HONOREES
Stella Antley, in recognition of her great-great grandmother, Charlotte McClee
Antley has made it her life’s work to keep McClee’s legacy alive. She wants history to know the impactful service McClee had in her community; a woman who was born a slave, but who went on to be a highly-skilled and beloved midwife to many.
Trevolia Hill
Hill is the true definition of a team player. She not only serves on Public Health’s Health Equity Team, but on every subcommittee and is an active member in assisting with any projects we embark on. We cannot do equity work for the community without the community, and Hill has gone above and beyond to fill that critical role for us.
WOW Supermarket, owned by Miguel Rodriquez and Miguelina Morel
WOW Supermarket goes above and beyond to prioritize the health and safety of their customers, their community, and staff not only during the COVID-19 pandemic, but throughout the year. WOW Supermarket provided their parking lot as a location for COVID-19 vaccination clinics and this partnership has been instrumental in improving access to healthcare services, promoting healthy lifestyles, and preventing the spread of disease.
Charles and Helene Pearson
The Pearsons play a critical role in helping the Haitian population and are so well connected with public health and social services. They are doing everything they can to make sure these newcomers to our community are taken care of and connected to resources that will help them thrive and build self-sufficiency.
