Household Hazardous Waste

These items are examples of household hazardous waste:
  • Oil Based Paint
  • Solvents
  • Bug Sprays
  • Weed Killer
  • Lawn Chemicals
  • Aerosols
  • Flourescent Bulbs
  • Oil & Oil Filters
  • Cleaners
  • Batteries

If these items are not disposed of properly, they may end up contaminating lakes, stream or soil, which in turn may pose a threat to the environment or public health. Latex paint, water-based paint, can be dried out with kitty litter or sand. Once the paint is totally dry, the can may be disposed of in your household trash.  We do not accept electronic equipment at the Household Hazardous Waste Events as they are accepted every day at the Convenience sites.

You can dispose of excess latex Paint at the Gaston County Landfill, 3155 Philadelphia Church Road, Dallas year-round. Please call 704-922-0267 before you bring paint.  Residents can bring cooking oil, up to 5-gallons of motor oil, up to 5 tires and batteries daily to all Gaston County Recycling Centers except for Farmers Market.  For larger loads of tires, make arrangements to bring these directly to the landfill by calling 704-922-0267.

The other materials must be disposed of through a special collection of household hazardous waste materials.
