Assault Investigation Leads to Murder Charge
On November 10, 2017, around 11:00pm, Gaston County Police responded to Carolinas Medical Center Lincoln in reference to a patient brought in with serious blunt force injuries stemming from an assault. Investigators concluded the assault occurred in the 100 block of Chum Rd, in Gaston County. The victim, Garrett Wade Abernathy, 22, of Lincolnton, was transferred to CMC Main in Charlotte for treatment.
Investigators identified a suspect and he was taken into custody without incident shortly after 6:00am the next morning, November 11, 2017, in Gastonia by officers of the Gastonia and Gaston County Police departments. Subsequent investigation led to the suspect, Scottie Lee Blanton, 29, of Gastonia, being charged with one count of Attempted Murder. He was booked into the Gaston County Jail with no bond.
On the evening of November 11, 2017, Mr. Abernathy died of his injuries.
This morning, the charge was upgraded to one count of Second Degree Murder and Blanton was served by detectives while in jail where he remains under a five hundred thousand dollar bond.
The charges in the case were obtained at the conclusion of several interviews, consultation with the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office.
There are no other suspects currently being sought.
