In March of 2009, the Board of County Commissioners adopted the Carolina Threads Trail Master
Plan for Gaston County. The Threads Trail is a proposed regional network of greenways and trails extending through 15 counties and reaching some 2.3 million people. As a regional system the Carolina Threads Trail will link many areas of Gaston County, but not all. The Planning Department in conjunction with Parks and Recreation
is working to plan a system of smaller local trails and greenways to not only connect with the Threads Trail and other trail and greenway systems, but to also link together neighborhoods and other points of interest within the County. Initial planning efforts also include the study a potential trail link between the County Park in Dallas, Rankin Lake Park (in Gastonia) and Gaston College.
