January 3 at 6:30 p.m. - Nurse, Fighter, Boy (drama/Canada/2008). An urban love story about the soul of a mother, the heart of a fighter, and the faith of a child. Jude, a single mother descended from a long line of Jamaican caregivers, Silence, a past-his-prime prizefighter, and young Ciel, who conjures dreams for his mother, are brought together when a late-night brawl finds the fighter in the nurse's care, causing the three lives to become entwined forever. January 10 at 6:30 p.m. - Illegal (psychological thriller/Belgium/2010). Tania, a former teacher from Russia, is living illegally in Belgium with her fourteen-year-old son, Ivan. One day, stopped on the street by police for a routine check, Tania is arrested and placed in an immigration detention center. Threatened with deportation and fearful for Ivan's fate, Tania is determined to preserve her dignity and be reunited with her son. The Human Resource Manager of Jerusalem's largest bakery has a long list of personal problems - plus he hates his job. When one of the bakery's foreign workers is killed in a suicide bombing, the Human Resource Manager is sent to the victim's hometown in Romania to make amends. As the journey goes awry, the man fights to regain the bakery's reputation - and his own humanity. When Nemanja develops a serious heart condition requiring expensive surgery, Mladen is is contacted by a shadowy business man with a repugnant offer to assassinate a rival for money. As the boy's condition deteriorates, Mladen must weigh his son's life against his own righteousness. When the oddball duo arrives in the village of Santa Maria, business really takes off. The con-man manager is sure he can find the right opponent to throw the fight, but fishing in Santa Maria lands a bigger catch than he had hoped for. Caught between the rebel and government forces, Adam makes a decision that he will forever regret. February 28 at 6:30 p.m. - The Colors of the Mountain (drama/Colombia/2010). Young Manuel lives with his hard-working parents in the remote mountains of Colombia. While the adults in their lives try to avoid both the armed military and rebels fighting in the area, Manuel and his friends are obsessed with playing soccer. When the new soccer ball Manuel has received as a birthday gift is kicked into a minefield, the boys will do everything in their power to recover the prized ball - a symbol of their lives and dreams. The popular For-Adults Film Series returns to the Gaston County Public Library in January and February 2012 with free public showings of award-winning foreign and independent films. Described as smartly-directed, intelligently-written, beautifully-photographed, thought-provoking motion pictures from around the world, the nine-part 2012 series includes films from Belgium, Canada, Uruguay, Chad, Serbia, Colombia, and Israel.
