Sources of Community Health Data
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS): This website presents data on health behaviors that influence the onset of leading causes of death and disability. such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and injuries. The survey is conducted by telephone with NC residents over age 18. Data is available for individual counties.
Census: The Census provides a wealth of data about US residents, including their income, race, employment status, and educational attainment. This website provides tools for searching, preparing tables, and mapping this data and can be organized by state, metropolitan statistical area, county, city, town, census tracts, and bloc groups. For help using the webpage, call the US Census Bureau, Charlotte Regional Office at 704/424-6400; their office is open from 8:30 - 4:30 , Monday through Friday.
North Carolina Division of Public Health: This website provides information on the programs and services of North Carolina's state public health system: Administrative, Local, and Community Support; Chronic Disease and Injury; Environmental Health; Epidemiology; Laboratory of Public Health; Minority Health and Health Disparities; Oral Health; State Center for Health Statistics; Office of Research, Demonstrations, and Rural Health Development; Vital Records; and, Women's Children's Health.
North Carolina HIV/STD Prevention and Care Branch: This office of the State Health Department works to reduce and eliminate illness and deaths due to HIV, AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases. This website provides statistics on the number of people infected by these diseases. Please Note: the site contains HIV prevention messages that may not be appropriate for all audiences.if you are not seeking such information, please do not use this website.
North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics: This webpage provides state and county data on pregnancies, live births, birth defects, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data, and vital statistics - which describes deaths by cause.
The Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report : This report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides information on communicable diseases, strategies for their control, and data on the number of affected persons. These reports are available, at no charge, on this website and via email.
